Chattanooga cyclist David Meek was killed early this morning on his commute, when he was struck by a box truck.
The driver of the truck stated that he never saw David. The police have not charged the truck driver with any offense, despite what would appear to be a clear violation of the Jeff Roth and Brian Brown Bicycle Protection Act of 2007 which provides that "the operator of a motor vehicle when overtaking and passing a bicycle proceeding in the same direction on the roadway, shall leave a safe distance between the motor vehicle and the bicycle of not less than three feet (3') and shall maintain such clearance until safely past the overtaken bicycle."
David had just yesterday sent out a message to friends, noting the weather had improved and encouraging them to commute to work by bike. In the post he wrote, "No this is not an official Bike2Work event where we are enticed to ride to work by fine food and prizes. This is just ride your bike to work for fun and adventure. Tomorrow promises to be a beautiful day. Its the next day of the rest of your life. See you on the road."
David was the founder and owner of Privater Bicycles.
David has been a member of SORBA-Chattanooga and president of the Chattanooga Bike Club.
David will be missed.
